Asphalt Calculator

Estimate compacted asphalt volume and weight from pavement area, user-entered thickness, user-entered density, repeated sections, exclusions, allowance, and optional material pricing.

Quantity estimator only. This calculator does not choose pavement thickness, asphalt mix, density, compaction level, base-course design, drainage, slope, binder grade, structural section, traffic loading, or specification requirements. Enter values appropriate for your project.

Measurement system

Imperial uses feet, square feet, inches, lb/ft³, and short tons. Metric uses meters, square meters, millimeters, kg/m³, and metric tonnes.

Asphalt sections

Add separate sections when geometry, compacted thickness, or density differs.

Density has no hidden default. Use the compacted density supplied for the asphalt material or project you are estimating.

Extra asphalt allowance

Apply a project-level allowance to the calculated asphalt weight. No percentage is treated as universally correct.

Optional material price

Imperial pricing is per short ton. Metric pricing is per metric tonne. When you switch measurement systems, an entered price is converted to preserve the same cost per unit of mass.

How to use it

Estimate asphalt in four steps

1

Measure the paving area

Enter a rectangle using length and width, or enter a known surface area directly.

2

Enter compacted thickness

Use the compacted asphalt thickness specified for your project. The calculator does not choose thickness.

3

Enter asphalt density

Use density information appropriate for the actual material. No density value is silently assumed.

4

Add allowance and price

Choose your own material allowance and optionally enter a price per short ton or metric tonne.

Asphalt formulas

Rectangle areaarea = length × width
Base area per sectiongross area − excluded area
Compacted volumebase area ft² × thickness in ÷ 12
Asphalt weightvolume ft³ × density lb/ft³
Short tonsweight lb ÷ 2,000
Required asphaltbase weight × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Material costrequired tons × entered price per ton

Asphalt example

A 50 ft × 20 ft area is 1,000 ft². At 2 inches compacted thickness, the volume is about 166.667 ft³ or 6.173 yd³. Using a user-entered density of 145 lb/ft³ gives about 24,166.67 lb, or 12.083 short tons, before allowance. With a 5% allowance, the required quantity is 12.6875 short tons. At $120 per short ton, the estimated material cost is $1,522.50.

Asphalt calculator FAQs

What asphalt density should I enter?

Use the compacted density appropriate for your asphalt mixture or project documentation. Asphalt density can vary, so the calculator intentionally does not hide a default.

Does the calculator choose pavement thickness?

No. Thickness is a project input. Pavement design depends on conditions that are outside this quantity estimator.

Why are asphalt tons not rounded to whole tons?

The calculator reports decimal weight so the estimate does not silently add an arbitrary whole-ton rounding rule.

What does excluded area mean?

Excluded area is surface that should not receive asphalt inside a measured section. Enter the actual excluded surface area for one repeated section.

Can sections use different thicknesses or densities?

Yes. Add separate asphalt sections whenever thickness, density, geometry, or other quantity inputs differ.

Can I use Metric units?

Yes. Metric mode uses meters, square meters, millimeters, kg/m³, cubic meters, kilograms, and metric tonnes.

Does cost include labor, hauling, or site preparation?

No. Optional cost is only required asphalt weight multiplied by the material price you enter.

Can I share an asphalt estimate?

Yes. After calculation, the current project can be stored in the page URL while the resulting URL remains within a conservative size limit.

Reference methodology

The calculator converts measured paving area and compacted thickness to volume, then converts volume to weight using the density you enter. Unit conversions use defined international unit relationships.

Assumptions and limitations

  • All geometry, thickness, density, quantity, exclusion, allowance, and pricing values are user supplied.
  • Rectangle mode uses length × width. Direct-area mode uses the entered surface area.
  • Excluded area is entered per repeated section and must be smaller than that section's gross area.
  • Compacted volume is calculated from the base paved area after exclusions.
  • Weight is calculated independently for each section using that section's entered density.
  • Project volume and weight are summed only after individual sections are calculated.
  • The allowance percentage is applied to project asphalt weight after all section weights are combined.
  • Short-ton and metric-tonne results remain decimal values; no whole-ton purchase rounding is imposed.
  • Optional cost includes only required asphalt weight × entered material price.
  • This calculator does not choose pavement thickness, asphalt mix, density, compaction level, base-course design, drainage, slope, binder grade, structural section, traffic loading, or code/specification compliance.
