Framing

Wall Stud Calculator

Estimate how many wall studs to buy from wall length, user-selected on-center spacing, repeated identical walls, additional studs per wall, extra-material allowance, and optional price per stud.

Quantity estimator only. This calculator does not determine whether a wall is load-bearing, allowable stud spacing, stud size, species, grade, wall height, headers, king/jack/cripple studs, corner framing, plates, blocking, bracing, fastening, wind/seismic design, fire requirements, or code compliance. Use spacing and additional-stud counts from your plans or project requirements.

Measurement system

Imperial uses feet for wall length and inches for stud spacing. Metric uses meters and millimeters. Existing values are converted when you switch systems.

Wall groups

Add one group for each wall length, spacing, or additional-stud requirement. Repeated identical walls can share one group.

Stud layout is calculated separately for each wall. The calculator does not combine unrelated wall lengths before spacing and end-stud rounding.

Extra stud allowance

Apply a project-level purchase allowance after all base wall-group stud counts are combined. No percentage is treated as universally correct.

Optional price

Enter a price per stud only if you want a simple material cost estimate.

How to use it

Estimate wall studs in four steps

1

Enter wall length

Enter the actual length of each wall or repeated wall group.

2

Enter your spacing

Use the on-center stud spacing required by your plans or project. Quick-fill values are conveniences, not design recommendations.

3

Add project-specific studs

Enter any additional studs per wall required by your own framing plan, such as extra framing around intersections or openings.

4

Add purchase allowance

Choose your project-level spare-material allowance and optionally enter a price per stud.

Wall stud example

A 20 ft wall is 240 inches long. With user-entered 16 in on-center spacing, 240 ÷ 16 gives 15 spacing intervals, so the layout uses 16 studs including the opposite end. If the framing plan calls for 2 additional studs per wall, each wall uses 18 studs. Two identical walls therefore use 36 base studs. A 10% allowance gives an exact purchase quantity of 39.6, which rounds to 40 whole studs.

Wall stud calculator FAQs

Why does the formula add one stud?

The spacing calculation counts the intervals required across the wall. One opposite-end stud is then added to complete the layout.

Does an exact spacing multiple get an extra interval?

No. For an 8 ft wall at 16 in spacing, 96 ÷ 16 is exactly 6 intervals, so the layout count is 7 studs, not 8.

Can I use 12, 16, or 24 inch spacing?

The page offers those values as quick-fill conveniences, but it does not decide which spacing is structurally allowed for your wall. Use the spacing required by your plans or applicable requirements.

What are additional studs per wall?

This is a user-entered count for framing your project requires beyond the basic spacing layout. The calculator does not automatically invent king, jack, cripple, corner, backing, or intersection framing.

Why are separate walls calculated separately?

Each wall needs its own spacing layout and opposite end condition. Combining unrelated wall lengths first can undercount studs.

Can I use Metric measurements?

Yes. Wall length switches between feet and meters, and stud spacing switches between inches and millimeters.

Does this calculator size or design the wall?

No. Stud size, grade, spacing limits, wall height, loads, headers, bracing, fastening, and code compliance are outside this quantity estimator.

Can I share an estimate?

Yes. After a successful calculation, the current wall project can be represented in the page URL while the resulting URL remains within a conservative size limit.

Reference methodology

The calculator performs only quantity arithmetic from the wall length, on-center spacing, additional-stud count, repeated-wall quantity, and allowance you provide. Unit conversion uses the international foot relationship of exactly 0.3048 meter and the international inch relationship of exactly 25.4 millimeters.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Wall length and stud spacing are user-entered project inputs.
  • Layout intervals are rounded upward for each wall individually.
  • One opposite-end stud is added after calculating the required spacing intervals.
  • Additional studs per wall must be a whole non-negative count and are added after the basic spacing layout.
  • Repeated wall quantity must be a positive whole number.
  • Base project studs are summed after each wall group is calculated independently.
  • The allowance percentage is user supplied and is applied only after the base project stud count is combined.
  • Whole purchase quantity is rounded upward once at the project level.
  • Optional material cost includes only whole studs × entered price per stud.
  • Quick-fill spacing values are convenience inputs, not structural recommendations.
  • This calculator does not determine load-bearing status, stud size/species/grade, allowable spacing, wall height, openings, headers, king/jack/cripple studs, corners, plates, blocking, bracing, fasteners, structural capacity, wind/seismic design, fire requirements, or code compliance.
