Wallpaper calculation guide
How to calculate how many wallpaper rolls you need
Measure each wall separately, enter the common wall height, and use the dimensions and pattern information printed for the wallpaper you plan to buy. You can work in Imperial units (ft and in) or Metric units (m and cm). The Wallpaper Calculator works from complete vertical drops rather than simply dividing wall area by roll area.
Wallpaper calculator formula
First calculate how many complete vertical drops are needed across each wall:
Each wall is rounded separately, then the drop quantities are added together:
The physical length of one drop begins with the wall height plus any trim allowance:
Patterned wallpaper may require a longer matched drop so the design lines up correctly.
Wallpaper calculation example
Suppose two walls are each 5 ft wide and 8 ft high (about 1.524 m wide and 2.438 m high). The wallpaper is 20.5 in wide and 33 ft long (about 52.07 cm wide and 10.058 m long). It is free-match wallpaper with a 4 in (10.16 cm) trim allowance.
If a 10% extra-drop allowance is added, the project requires 7 drops. At 3 complete drops per roll, that rounds upward to 3 wallpaper rolls.
Why are walls calculated separately?
Wallpaper is installed as vertical strips. At the end of each wall, the remaining horizontal space may be smaller than a complete wallpaper width. That leftover width does not automatically continue around a corner as though all walls formed one uninterrupted flat surface.
Why not calculate wallpaper using square footage alone?
Wallpaper roll area is useful reference information, but it does not tell you how many complete vertical strips can actually be cut from a roll.
Roll width, wall height, trimming, pattern repeat, and whole-drop rounding can all create material that cannot be counted as full wall coverage.
Area-only estimate
Treats every square foot printed on the roll as equally usable.
Drop-based estimate
Counts complete vertical strips that can actually be cut and installed.
Free, straight, and offset wallpaper matches
Free / random match
No vertical pattern alignment is required between adjacent drops. The matched drop length is simply the wall height plus the entered trim allowance.
Straight match
The design aligns horizontally across neighboring strips. The calculator rounds the drop length upward to a complete pattern repeat.
Offset match
Neighboring strips are shifted by the offset printed for the wallpaper. The calculator uses both the repeat and entered offset as a conservative planning estimate.
How is straight-match wallpaper calculated?
After wall height and trimming are combined, the required drop length is rounded upward to the next complete vertical pattern repeat.
The difference between that matched drop length and the minimum physical drop length is reported as pattern-match waste per drop.
How is offset-match wallpaper estimated?
Offset wallpaper requires neighboring drops to align at a shifted point in the pattern. The product label may list both a repeat and an offset.
HomeMeasureWorks first rounds the drop to a complete repeat, then adds the offset you entered as a conservative alignment allowance.
What is trim allowance?
Trim allowance is extra length added to each vertical drop for cutting and trimming at the top and bottom of the wall.
How does the extra drop allowance work?
After the base number of drops is calculated, you can optionally add extra whole drops for damage, future repairs, or other project-specific needs.
How many complete wallpaper drops fit on one roll?
The calculator divides the total physical roll length by the pattern-adjusted drop length and counts only complete drops.
If the remaining roll length is shorter than one complete matched drop, it is not counted as another usable full-height strip.
How many wallpaper rolls should I buy?
Because wallpaper is purchased in whole rolls, the final roll may contain more complete drops than the project requires. The calculator reports those as extra drops from roll rounding.
What does nominal unused roll length mean?
The calculator compares the total length of all rolls purchased with the matched drop length allocated to the drops required by the project.
How to estimate wallpaper cost
The optional cost estimate covers only the roll price you enter. It does not automatically include adhesive, primer, lining paper, tools, delivery, taxes, labor, wall preparation, removal, or other project costs.
What about doors and windows?
This calculator intentionally works from full wall widths rather than automatically subtracting every opening.
Wallpaper is purchased and cut in complete vertical drops, and pieces around doors or windows may still consume substantial portions of those drops. Simply subtracting opening area can therefore understate the number of strips or rolls required.
Tips for a more accurate wallpaper estimate
Enter each wall width independently so drop quantities round correctly.
Wallpaper widths and roll lengths vary, so use the specifications for the product you are buying. You can enter them in Imperial or Metric units using the measurement-system selector.
Free, straight, and offset patterns can produce very different usable drop lengths.
For patterned wallpaper, use the repeat shown on the product label or technical information.
For offset-match wallpaper, enter the specific offset supplied for that design.
When possible, confirm that enough matching wallpaper is available for the complete project.
Wallpaper calculator FAQ
How do I calculate how many wallpaper rolls I need?
Calculate the whole vertical drops required for each wall, determine the matched length of each drop, calculate how many complete drops fit on one roll, and round the resulting roll quantity upward. HomeMeasureWorks performs those steps automatically.
Can I use Metric measurements?
Yes. Choose Metric to enter wall dimensions and roll length in meters, and wallpaper width, pattern repeat, pattern offset, and trim allowance in centimeters. You can switch between Imperial and Metric at any time, and entered measurements are converted automatically.
Why doesn't the calculator just use wall square footage?
Wallpaper is cut into full-height vertical strips. Roll width, wall height, trimming, pattern repeat, and whole-drop rounding affect how much of each roll is actually usable.
Should I enter each wall separately?
Yes. Each wall width is rounded independently to a whole number of wallpaper drops, which avoids carrying leftover horizontal width through corners.
What does free or random match mean?
It means neighboring wallpaper drops do not require a specific vertical pattern alignment. The calculator therefore does not add pattern repeat waste to the drop length.
What is straight-match wallpaper?
Straight-match wallpaper aligns the same part of the pattern across neighboring strips. The calculator rounds the required drop length up to a complete pattern repeat.
What is offset-match wallpaper?
Offset-match wallpaper aligns neighboring strips at a shifted point in the pattern. Enter both the repeat and offset specified for the actual wallpaper product.
Does pattern repeat increase the number of rolls?
It can. A longer matched drop may reduce the number of complete drops that fit on one roll, which can increase the whole-roll purchase quantity.
What does pattern-match waste per drop mean?
It is the additional length added by pattern alignment beyond the wall height and trim allowance.
Should I subtract doors and windows?
Not automatically. Wallpaper is purchased and cut as complete drops, and openings often do not reduce the required number of full strips proportionally to their square footage.
Can I add extra wallpaper for repairs?
Yes. Use the extra-drop allowance to add whole drops before the calculator rounds the project up to whole rolls.
Can I estimate wallpaper cost?
Yes. Enter an optional price per roll and the calculator multiplies it by the number of whole rolls required.

Assumptions and limitations
This calculator estimates wallpaper from complete vertical drops using the wall widths, common wall height, roll dimensions, match type, pattern information, trim allowance, and optional extra-drop allowance you provide. Imperial and Metric inputs are converted internally before the same calculation method is applied.
Walls entered together are assumed to have the same height. Walls with substantially different heights should be calculated separately because different drop lengths can change the number of usable strips per roll.
Offset-match calculations are conservative planning estimates. Exact strip sequencing can vary by product, pattern, and installation layout.
The calculator does not create a cutting diagram or automatically account for every door, window, alcove, sloped ceiling, staircase, mural, border, horizontal installation, or other unusual layout.
