Concrete Wall Calculator

Estimate concrete for one or more rectangular wall sections. Subtract rectangular through-openings, add a project allowance, and optionally convert the final volume into whole bags or ready-mix ordering quantities.

Quantity estimator only.Enter wall dimensions, thickness, openings, reinforcement requirements, and other project dimensions from your plans, engineer, contractor, or applicable requirements. This calculator does not determine structural wall thickness, reinforcement, concrete strength, footing design, retaining-wall loads, drainage, soil pressure, or code compliance.

Measurement system

Switch between Imperial and Metric. Existing measurements are converted rather than reinterpreted.

Wall groups

Group identical walls together with the quantity field. Add another wall group whenever dimensions or openings change.

Openings are treated as rectangular through-openings and repeat on each identical wall in the group. Because opening positions are not entered, the calculator cannot detect overlapping openings.

Extra concrete allowance

Add only the planning allowance appropriate for your project. No percentage is assumed to be correct for every job.

Purchasing and cost

Optional. Use the actual manufacturer yield or supplier ordering increment for the concrete you plan to buy.

Calculation method

How the concrete wall calculator works

The calculator finds the gross volume of each rectangular wall, subtracts rectangular through-openings, multiplies by the number of identical walls, sums all wall groups, applies your chosen allowance, and only then performs bag or supplier-order rounding.

1

Describe each wall

Enter wall length, height, thickness, and the number of identical walls.

2

Subtract openings

Add rectangular doors, windows, or other through-openings that repeat on each wall in the group.

3

Apply your allowance

Your allowance is applied to the net project concrete after openings are subtracted.

4

Convert to a purchase

Bag requirements round once at project level. Ready-mix rounds only when you enter a supplier increment.

Concrete wall formulas

Gross volume for one wallGross volume = length × height × thickness
Opening volumeOpening volume = width × height × wall thickness × opening quantity
Net volume for one wallNet concrete = gross wall volume − total opening volume
Repeated identical wallsGroup total = net concrete per wall × wall quantity
Planning volumeRequired = project base × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Bagged concreteBags to buy = ceiling(required volume ÷ manufacturer bag yield)

Concrete wall example

A 20 ft long, 8 ft high wall that is 8 in thick has a gross volume of 106.667 ft³. Subtracting one 6 ft × 7 ft through-opening removes 28 ft³, leaving 78.667 ft³ of base concrete. With a 10% allowance, the required volume is about 86.533 ft³, or 3.205 yd³.

Concrete wall calculator FAQs

Does the calculator subtract doors and windows?

Yes. Add each rectangular through-opening with its width, height, and quantity. The opening uses the wall's full thickness.

What happens when I set wall quantity above one?

The complete wall configuration, including its listed openings, repeats for every identical wall in that group.

Can it detect overlapping openings?

No. Opening positions are not entered, so the calculator validates individual fit and total opening area but cannot know whether two openings overlap physically.

Does it tell me how thick a concrete wall should be?

No. Wall thickness, reinforcement, concrete strength, structural loads, retaining-wall requirements, and footing design must come from appropriate project-specific guidance.

Why do I have to enter bag yield?

Concrete yield varies by product and bag size. Enter the actual manufacturer-stated yield instead of relying on a universal assumption based on bag weight.

Why are bags rounded only after all walls are added?

Rounding each wall independently can overstate the purchase. The calculator sums the exact project requirement first and then rounds once to whole bags.

Can I mix different wall sizes in one project?

Yes. Add a separate wall group whenever wall dimensions or opening layouts differ.

Can I use Metric units?

Yes. Length, height, and opening dimensions switch between feet and meters, while thickness switches between inches and millimeters. Purchase fields also convert to the appropriate volume unit.

Can I save or share the calculation?

Yes. After a successful calculation, the current project state is stored in the URL when it fits within a safe URL-size limit.

Reference methodology

Unit conversions use the international foot relationship of exactly 0.3048 meter. Bag calculations require user-entered product yield and round the final project requirement once to whole bags. Structural design decisions are intentionally outside the calculator's scope.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Walls are modeled as rectangular prisms with uniform thickness.
  • Openings are modeled as rectangular through-openings using the full wall thickness.
  • Each opening must fit within the wall dimensions and all openings together must leave positive wall area.
  • Opening positions are not modeled, so overlapping openings cannot be detected automatically.
  • Openings listed within a repeated wall group repeat on every wall in that group.
  • The allowance percentage is supplied by the user and applied after all openings are subtracted.
  • Bag quantities depend on the manufacturer yield entered and round once at whole-project level.
  • Ready-mix rounding occurs only when a supplier increment is entered.
  • Cost includes only entered material price, not labor, delivery, pumping, forms, reinforcement, taxes, or fees.
  • Curved, tapered, sloped, stepped, irregular, or varying-thickness walls are not automatically modeled.
